Wimbledon Championships Crowds

Every year around 40,000 people attend the Wimbledon Championships each day. Is there a mad stampede to exit the Grounds and if so, what can you do to beat the crowds?

Is there a rush to exit the Grounds at the end of the day?

Sometimes. 40,000 people attempting to leave the Wimbledon Grounds at exactly the same time, would certainly create bottlenecks at the gates.

However, this number is comprised of tennis fans who could have been watching the play on any of Wimbledon's 18 courts, as well as the thousands of Grounds' staff that work at the event.

Start times are staggered across these courts, with play starting on the Outside Courts at 11am, on No.1 Court at 1pm and on Centre Court at 1.30pm (2pm on finals weekend).

This means that matches are finishing throughout the afternoon, until the Grounds finally close 45 minutes after the end of the last match.

In practice, matches can finish late afternoon or could even go on into the late evening – right up to the 11pm deadline. Who can forget Andy Murray’s 3 hour 13 minute marathon victory against Marcos Baghdatis, that concluded at 11.02pm. In this example, fans had to be out of the Grounds by 11.47pm at the latest.

If a number of matches finish at the same time, there can be a queue when leaving the Grounds. With 13 active entrance and exit gates, however, these queues won’t be particularly long. Certainly not long enough to be planning a pre-match point exit!

We had a great time on Saturday

"Just wanted to let you know that we had a great time on Saturday and that it all went smoothly. I didn't realise it was better than making a booking in a restaurant, but even then we were very lucky to get a beautiful table for 6 at the Wingfield restaurant. It was the only one available! Thanks for helping me organise this nice day with the family and let's stay in touch for future years."
