Alcaraz defends his 2023 Wimbledon title

A key Wimbledon tradition is the opening match on Centre Court, which is reserved for the defending men's singles champion. This custom dates back to 1922 and serves as a special honour for the previous year's winner, acknowledging their achievement and giving them the prestigious opportunity to kick off the Tournament.

The anticipation and excitement are palpable as fans gather to watch the reigning champion inaugurate the Tournament. This match sets the tone for the fortnight, and the atmosphere is always electric with spectators eager to see if the champion can defend their title. It's a moment of great pride for the player, walking onto Centre Court with the knowledge that they are the focal point of one of the most iconic stages in tennis.

In recent years, this tradition has showcased some of the greatest names in tennis, adding to the legacy of Wimbledon. Icons like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic have all had the honour of opening the Championships, each bringing their unique flair and style to Centre Court. The opening match is more than just a game; it's a ceremonial start that encapsulates the essence of Wimbledon, blending tradition, excellence, and sportsmanship.
