February 2024

After the conclusion of the first Grand Slam of the year in Australia, February saw tournaments scattered all over the globe.

Sinner continues momentum in Rotterdam

Jannik Sinner played his first event since winning the first Grand Slam of his career: the ATP 500 in Rotterdam. Alex de Minaur had a great week, defeating Andrey Rublev and Grigor Dimitrov to make the Final. However, Sinner would win the title, only dropping one set all week and maintaining his 100% record this season. He would also rise to world number 3 for the first time.

Elsewhere, Carlos Alcaraz had a disappointing few weeks in South America, losing in the Semi Finals of the Buenos Aires ATP 250 to Nicolas Jarry, and then being forced to retire after just two games in Rio de Janeiro in the First Round. Sebastian Baez took home the ATP 500 trophy for the biggest win of his career.

First WTA 1000 level title for Paolini

Abu Dhabi hosted a WTA 500 event at the start of the month, and Elena Rybakina emerged victorious, beating Daria Kasatkina in the Final. The first 1000 level event of the season took place in Doha, where a resurgent Naomi Osaka had a promising week, beating Caroline Garcia on her way to the Quarter Finals. Osaka was beaten by another comeback player, Karolina Pliskova. Coco Gauff was beaten in her first match by Katerina Siniakova, but Rybakina had another good week making the Final. However, Iga Swiatek rarely loses in the Middle East, and came away with the Doha title for the third year in a row.

Two huge stories came out of the Dubai WTA 1000 event: the first was the run of qualifier Anna Kalinskaya. She beat Jelena Ostapenko, Gauff and Swiatek in consecutive matches to make the Final, only dropping one set in 7 matches in the event. The other big story was Jasmine Paolini, as the Italian beat Beatriz Haddad Maia and Maria Sakkari on her way to the Final. She would go on to beat Kalisnkaya to win her first WTA 1000 title, and rise up to 14 in the world rankings.

We had a great time on Saturday

"Just wanted to let you know that we had a great time on Saturday and that it all went smoothly. I didn't realise it was better than making a booking in a restaurant, but even then we were very lucky to get a beautiful table for 6 at the Wingfield restaurant. It was the only one available! Thanks for helping me organise this nice day with the family and let's stay in touch for future years."
