Alcaraz returns to winning ways, Swiatek triumphs

One of the biggest shocks of the year came in the early rounds at Indian Wells: Novak Djokovic, in his first event since the Australian Open, was beaten in the Third Round by lucky loser Luca Nardi, who is aged just 20 and was ranked outside of the world's top 100 at the time. Tommy Paul would beat Nardi and then Casper Ruud to make the Semi Finals, where he would lose to Daniil Medvedev. Jannik Sinner would set up a mouth-watering Semi Final against a resurgent Carlos Alcaraz, who looked to be playing some of his best tennis in a while, dropping just four games against Alex Zverev. Despite losing the first set, Alcaraz managed to beat Sinner to make his first Final since August last year. He would go one better and beat Medvedev to win the title, his first since Wimbledon.

On the women's side, there was a return to form for Angelique Kerber, as she beat Jelena Ostapenko and Veronika Kudermetova, before losing to fellow former world number 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the Fourth Round. Emma Navarro took out world number 2 Aryna Sabalenka at the same stage, but was beaten by Maria Sakkari in the Quarter Finals. The Greek went on to beat Coco Gauff to make the Final. Wozniacki was forced to retire against Iga Swiatek in the Quarter Finals, and the Polish top seed then beat Marta Kostyuk to reach the Final. Swiatek beat Sakkari in straight sets to win the title.

Fairytale week for Collins, Sinner keeps winning

Shortly after losing in Indian Wells, Djokovic withdrew from Miami. He has since announced that Goran Ivanesevic has left his coaching team. Andy Murray won his first two matches, but suffered an ankle injury which will keep him sidelined for weeks at least, with fears it could be longer. Grigor Dimitrov put in a breathtaking performance to stun Alcaraz in straight sets in the Quarter Finals. He would then back it up with another impressive win over Zverev to make the Final. However, Sinner continued his excellent start to the season, by demolishing Medvedev in the Semi Finals and then Dimitrov in the Final, losing just seven games across those two matches. The Miami title was his second career Masters title, and takes his record to 22-1 for the year so far. He also became world number 2 for the first time after that result, overtaking Alcaraz.

The biggest story pre-tournament was the tragic passing of Sabalenka's former boyfriend Konstantin Koltsov in Miami, The Belarusian still played the event, and beat Paula Badosa in her opening match, but exited in the Third Round to Anhelina Kalenina. Swiatek was unable to keep her winning run going, losing in the Fourth Round to Ekaterina Alexandrova. The Russian would go on to beat Jessica Pegula and make the Semi Finals. Elena Rybakina was in fine form, beating the likes of Madison Keys, Maria Sakkari and Victoria Azarenka to make the Final. However, the best player of the tournament was Danielle Collins, who recently announced that this would be her last year on tour. She beat 5 seeded players: Anastasia Potapova, Sorana Cirstea, Caroline Garcia, Alexandrova and Rybakina without dropping a set, to win her first ever WTA 1000 title in sensational fashion.
