October Tennis Round-Up & November Preview: Wimbledon 2027
by Luke Walker

30 October 2026
October brought a first Masters 1000 title for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, a comeback run from Britain's Sonay Kartal and a year-end No.1 ranking for Elena Rybakina. With the season-ending championships approaching, established names and emerging players have given Wimbledon fans plenty to follow.
November now takes the tour through Paris, Indian Wells, Turin and Bologna. Here are the stories that stood out in October, the events coming next and what they could mean for Wimbledon 2027.
October Tennis Round-Up
Alcaraz Finds Winning Form in Tokyo
Carlos Alcaraz retained his Tokyo title on 6 October, beating Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4), 6-4 in the final.
Alcaraz acknowledged that he was still working towards his best level, but produced his most consistent performance in the final. For a former Wimbledon champion, finding ways to win while rebuilding his form is an encouraging sign.
Davidovich Fokina Makes His Shanghai Breakthrough
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina claimed his first Masters 1000 title in Shanghai on 18 October. He recovered from a set and a break down to beat fellow Spaniard Rafael Jodar 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.
It was his third tour title of 2026, following victories in Mallorca and Chengdu. The Mallorca success is particularly relevant to Wimbledon because it came on grass. Shanghai adds evidence that he can finish the job at a bigger tournament, even after a season interrupted by a back injury.
Jodar also leaves October as a name to follow. The 20-year-old reached his first Masters 1000 final during his first full tour season. Whether he can translate that progress to grass will be one of the questions for 2027.
Kartal's Comeback Reaches the Wuhan Final
Sonay Kartal provided one of the month's most encouraging stories for British tennis. After six months out with a back injury, including missing Wimbledon, she reached her first WTA 1000 final in Wuhan.
Maja Chwalinska won the final 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 to claim her first WTA title. For Kartal, reaching that stage in only the third event of her comeback was a substantial step forward.
Her wins over Elina Svitolina and Jelena Ostapenko showed that she could compete with established opponents again. After an enforced absence from her home Grand Slam, that offers British fans a positive story to follow towards next summer.
Rybakina Secures Year-End No.1
Elena Rybakina secured the year-end world No.1 ranking for the first time on 29 October. Her victory over Yulia Putintseva in Tokyo followed a title-winning week in Ningbo.
However, she withdrew from Tokyo the following day with neck inflammation and pain. Her immediate fitness is therefore something to watch before the WTA Finals.
For Wimbledon, the more significant development is the strength of her season as a whole. The 2022 champion already has proven grass-court credentials. A No.1 finish adds to the reasons to follow her in 2027.
What October Means for Wimbledon 2027
The strongest theme is the mix of established champions, improving challengers and returning players. Alcaraz and Rybakina remain familiar Wimbledon names, while Davidovich Fokina, Jodar and Kartal provide different stories to follow.
There is still a long way to go. Autumn hard-court results are not a reliable forecast of next summer's grass-court form. Fitness, results through the first half of 2027 and preparation on grass will all matter.

November Tennis Preview
Paris Masters: 2-8 November
The Paris Masters main draw runs from 2 to 8 November, following qualifying on 31 October and 1 November.
As the final Masters 1000 event of the season, it will settle the remaining places at the ATP Finals. It also gives players one more opportunity to turn an encouraging autumn into a major title.
WTA Finals: 8-15 November
The WTA Finals take place in Indian Wells from 8 to 15 November.
There is a direct Wimbledon connection: 2026 champion Linda Noskova and runner-up Karolina Muchova have both qualified. They join a field that also includes Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff.
For Wimbledon followers, this is a chance to see how this summer's finalists fare against the season's leading players. Noskova will be one to watch ahead of her Wimbledon title defence next summer.
ATP Finals: 15-22 November
The ATP Finals return to Turin from 15 to 22 November. Alexander Zverev, Alcaraz, Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev have already qualified. Jannik Sinner also qualified but will not compete because of injury.
With leading players facing one another across the week, Turin should provide a useful final assessment of their form before the off-season. Sinner's return will instead be a story to follow in 2027.
Davis Cup Final 8: 24-29 November
The Davis Cup Final 8 takes place in Bologna from 24 to 29 November. Great Britain face Germany in the quarter-finals on 26 November.
It offers a different finish to the season, with national teams competing for the title. For British fans, it is another opportunity to follow home players before attention turns to the new year.
What We'll Be Watching
Three questions stand out: can the autumn's breakthrough players sustain their progress, how will Wimbledon finalists Noskova and Muchova finish their seasons, and which players will reach the off-season ready for a fresh start?
November will not identify next year's Wimbledon champions. It will give us a clearer picture of the players and stories to follow when the 2027 season begins.
