If you Visit Only one Other Court, Make it st Ives Tennis Club
by Luke Walker

For tennis fans visiting Wimbledon from overseas, the UK has more to offer than just the famous grass courts of SW19. If you have time to explore, head to Cornwall and play at St Ives Tennis Club, where breath taking views, rich history, and a welcoming atmosphere await.
Tennis with a spectacular view
Perched above Porthminster Beach, St Ives Tennis Club offers what may be England’s most scenic playing backdrop. From its two all-weather synthetic clay courts, you’ll see turquoise waters, golden sands, and the charming town of St Ives - a striking contrast to Wimbledon’s enclosed grass courts. The medium-paced surface provides a different feel while allowing for year-round play.

A club with History
St Ives Tennis Club has a long and rich history, dating back to 1884. It holds the distinction of being Cornwall’s first tennis club, established at a time when the sport was just gaining popularity in Britain and beyond. Playing on these courts means stepping into over 140 years of tennis tradition, in a location that has always embraced the game.
While the club honours its past, it has kept up with the times. In 2020, it became the first club in Cornwall to install modern synthetic clay courts, ensuring a high-quality playing surface that mimics the movement and control of European red clay.
The G7 Summit and St Ives
In June 2021, the world’s attention turned to St Ives and nearby Carbis Bay, as the G7 Summit brought global leaders, including the U.S. President, to this picturesque coastal town. While world affairs took centre stage, the event also highlighted the incredible beauty and appeal of the area.
For tennis fans, this connection adds an extra layer of intrigue. Playing at St Ives Tennis Club means stepping onto courts in a town that has welcomed international figures and been recognised as one of the UK’s most stunning locations.
A different side of British tennis
Clubs like St Ives showcase the sport’s accessible, community-driven side. Visitors can book a court, enjoy a match, and take in the relaxed seaside atmosphere. The fresh air and slower pace make it a unique place to play - whether for a casual hit or a friendly doubles match with locals, without the pressure of a tournament setting. Find out more about tennis and other sporting activities in Carbis Bay.
Booking
Visitors are welcome on a weekday pay-and-play basis, no membership needed. Just book online, bring your racket, and enjoy a game with the Atlantic Ocean as your backdrop.
Getting to St Ives from London
Reaching St Ives from London is straightforward, with options by train or car. The most scenic route is by train. From London Paddington, take a Great Western Railway service to St Erth, a journey of around 5 hours. At St Erth, transfer to the St Ives Bay Line, a short 10-minute ride offering breath taking coastal views as you approach the town. St Ives train station is just a short walk from the tennis club and town centre.
For those driving, St Ives is about 300 miles from London, taking around 5 to 6 hours via the M4, M5, and A30. The final stretch into St Ives winds through beautiful Cornish countryside. Parking in St Ives can be limited, so it’s advisable to use the Park & Ride at St Erth or Trenwith Car Park and take a shuttle into town.
Where to stay
St Ives offers a range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to self-catering lodges. The following recommendations all played host to international summit visitors, including Prime Ministers and Presidents from the world’s leading democracies.
Una St Ives provides a modern resort experience with high-end lodges, a spa, and a restaurant, perfect for relaxation after a day on the courts. For beachfront luxury, Carbis Bay Hotel & Estate offers stunning sea views and direct access to the famous Carbis Bay Beach. If you prefer a more private setting, Carbis Bay Lodge offers exclusive, stylish accommodation. For those who appreciate history, Tregenna Castle Resort combines a grand, historic setting with extensive facilities, including a golf course, tennis courts and leisure amenities, all within walking distance of St Ives Tennis Club.
