April 2025
April sees the start of the European clay swing, with the biggest events taking place in Monte-Carlo and Madrid.
Zverev, Alcaraz and more roll the dice for Monte-Carlo title
Whilst world number 1 Jannik Sinner is still suspended, the entry list remains strong for the only non-mandatory Masters event on the ATP Tour. Alex Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, and Novak Djokovic are all entered, as is defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas. The only top 30 player opting not to play is Tommy Paul. Richard Gasquet has been given a wildcard, in his last season on the tour.
As it stands, Miami champion Jakub Mensik will have to play Qualifying, due to his ranking not being high enough at the entry cut off.
Just after Monte-Carlo and before Madrid, there are two ATP 500 events in Barcelona and Munich. Alcaraz, Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev lead the field for Barcelona, with Zverev and Fritz playing in Munich.
The WTA 500 event in Stuttgart boasts a very strong field, with 8 of the top 10 women in the world entered. This includes Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Mirra Andreeva.
Rublev and Swiatek aim to defend Madrid titles
Swiatek beat Sabalenka in a three-hour classic last year to win the title, and they are both entered into Madrid this year, alongside the rest of the top 70. Petra Kvitova has won the title here three times, and has entered via a special ranking.
Having missed Indian Wells, Miami, and Monte-Carlo, Madrid will be the fourth and final Masters that Sinner will miss due to his suspension. The rest of the top 70 are entered. Rublev overcame illness to win his second Masters title here last year, and will aim to defend it.
