August sees the majority of the North American hard court swing take place, with the climax being the final Grand Slam of the year in New York.
Many big names missing in Canada
Unfortunately, with the ATP and WTA 1000 events scheduled just two weeks after Wimbledon, Canada comes too soon for many of the top players. In Toronto: Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Jack Draper all withdrew from the tournament. Alex Zverev is the top seed with Taylor Fritz second.
In Montreal: Aryna Sabalenka and Qinwen Zheng are absent. Coco Gauff is the top seed and Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek is second seed. Former world number 5 and Wimbledon Finalist Eugenie Bouchard plays her last event here.
Most of these names are expected to return in Cincinnati, however Draper has suffered an injury which will rule him out of Cincinnati. The Brit hopes to return for the US Open. Zheng has undergone elbow surgery and will miss both Cincinnati and the US Open.

Sinner and Sabalenka look to defend crowns
The US Open will see Sinner defend his title, with Alcaraz, Djokovic and more looking to stop him. After reaching the Final last year, Fritz will lead the home hopes, alongside Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe. Hubert Hurkacz and Grigor Dimitrov will miss the event due to injury.
World number 1 Sabalenka has not won a Grand Slam this year despite being in two Grand Slam Finals, but will look to defend her title. Gauff is a former winner here and will lead 5 Americans in the top 11 of the rankings at time of writing: last year’s Finalist Jessica Pegula, Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys and Emma Navarro. Two-time Grand Slam champion Petra Kvitova will retire from tennis after the tournament.
