The Month Ahead in Tennis - October 2023

October sees a proper Asian swing for the first time since 2019, as the Shanghai ATP 1000 and Beijing WTA 1000 events take place.

Shanghai

Novak Djokovic will miss the Asian contests, with the 36-year-old seeking recovery time ahead of the end of the season, and having won titles in Cincinnati and New York in recent weeks, as well as making a Davis Cup appearance for Serbia.

Carlos Alcaraz will be the top seed in Djokovic's absence, and the rest of the top 10 will be present, including Daniil Medvedev, Holger Rune, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner. Medvedev won this event the last time it was played, back in 2019.

Beijing

All of the top 30 women in the world rankings are entered for Beijing at the moment. This includes new world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, and Ons Jabeur. This event also has not been played since 2019, Naomi Osaka was the last winner.
