October 2024

It is the final push for the end of the season, with big events taking place in Asia and Europe ahead of the ATP and WTA Finals.

Strong lineup for Shanghai

Jannik Sinner, Alex Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz are in the draw for the Shanghai Masters, as is Novak Djokovic. The Serb needs a strong end of season if he wants to qualify for the ATP Finals, but comments have indicated Shanghai may be his last event of 2024, having also played for Serbia in the Davis Cup recently. Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz has been struggling with injury since Wimbledon, and will not be able to defend his title here. Sinner and Alcaraz could meet in the Semi Finals, with Zverev projected to play Djokovic at the same stage.

Zverev and Medvedev headline the Vienna ATP 500 later in the month, with Dominic Thiem set to play his last ever professional match at the event.

Sabalenka chasing world number 1 ranking

After her US Open title, Aryna Sabalenka will set her sights on the world number 1 ranking. Iga Swiatek is not playing in the Beijing WTA 1000 event, giving her a chance to close the gap on the Pole. US Open Runner-Up Jessica Pegula is the second seed, whereas world number 4 Elena Rybakina withdrew from the event. Jasmine Paolini and Coco Gauff will look to cement their places in the WTA Finals.

Wuhan will host a WTA 1000 event for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic, and will see the likes of Swiatek, Sabalenka, Pegula and Rybakina battle for the title. Sabalenka won the last edition of the tournament back in 2019 and will look to repeat that feat this time around.
