August brought the North American hard-court swing, with major events in Toronto, Montreal and Cincinnati as players built towards the US Open. It also offered the first real test of how the leading names would respond after Wimbledon, with several of the biggest players either absent or struggling to find their best form.
Shelton and Fils claim Masters titles
The Montreal draw was already open without Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, but it opened up further when top seed and Wimbledon finalist Alex Zverev lost his opening match to Tallon Griekspoor. Second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime also withdrew through injury.
Defending champion Ben Shelton took advantage, beating compatriot Learner Tien to reach the final. Brandon Nakashima joined him after overcoming Rafael Jodar to reach his first Masters final. Shelton then defeated Nakashima to win his second career Masters title and his second in Canada.
After his run to the Wimbledon final, Zverev would have hoped to carry that momentum into the North American swing. Instead, his early Montreal exit was a reminder of how quickly form can change once the tour moves from grass to hard courts.
Cincinnati saw Djokovic return to action, although his stay was brief after a first-match defeat to Thiago Agustin Tirante. Arthur Fils beat Flavio Cobolli to reach his first Masters final, while Frances Tiafoe defeated Nakashima to join him there.
Fils came through a closely fought three-set final to win his first Masters title. His progress through the summer adds another name to the group of younger players capable of challenging the established stars at the biggest tournaments.
Swiatek returns to winning form
World number one Aryna Sabalenka arrived in Toronto looking to build form ahead of her US Open title defence, but she was beaten by Ekaterina Alexandrova in the fourth round.
Elena Rybakina made ground in the rankings after coming from a set down to beat Coco Gauff and reach the final. Iga Swiatek also needed a strong week after a difficult season and beat Elina Svitolina to reach the final.
Swiatek then defeated Rybakina to win her first title of the year and signal a return to form after a more difficult first half of the season.
That recovery was notable after the grass season. Swiatek's Wimbledon campaign had placed additional attention on how she would respond during the second half of the year, and the Toronto title suggested she was beginning to rediscover her best level.
Gauff wins Cincinnati as Sabalenka struggles
Sabalenka was again unable to find her best form in Cincinnati, losing to Sara Bejlek in the fourth round and leaving her world number one ranking under pressure heading into the US Open.
Rybakina was one of the players capable of closing the gap, but suffered an injury during her quarter-final against Swiatek that raised doubts over her US Open participation.
Jessica Pegula defeated Swiatek to reach the final, while Gauff overcame Bejlek to join her there. Gauff then beat Pegula in straight sets to win her first title of the year and, like Swiatek, make an important return to winning form before the final Grand Slam of the season.
What August tells us after Wimbledon
The North American swing has underlined how quickly the tennis picture can change after The Championships. Sinner and Alcaraz were absent from much of the month, Zverev struggled after reaching the Wimbledon final, while younger players such as Shelton and Fils took advantage of the opportunity.
On the women's side, Swiatek and Gauff both returned to winning form, while Sabalenka and Rybakina faced more difficult months. Those shifts will shape the US Open, but they also give an early indication of which players may carry momentum into the final part of the season.
For Wimbledon followers, these tournaments are also a reminder that the players dominating one surface or one part of the season are not necessarily the same names who will be strongest when the tour returns to grass.
