April 2024

April saw the start of the European clay swing, and Rafael Nadal make his return to the ATP Tour.

Tsitsipas treble in Monte-Carlo

Carlos Alcaraz was forced to withdraw from the first clay court Masters event of the season before his first match. Jannik Sinner continued his imperious start to the year by progressing to the Semi Finals, beating Holger Rune to get there. Novak Djokovic played his first event since a shock early loss in Indian Wells. He would return to winning ways with a run to the Semi Finals too. However, both of these men were taken out, Sinner by Stefanos Tsitsipas and Djokovic by Casper Ruud. Tsitsipas would go on to beat Ruud in the Final convincingly to win Monte-Carlo for the third time.

Nadal returns to action in Barcelona

In what is likely to be Rafael Nadal’s last season, he played for the first time since January in the Barcelona ATP 500. He won his first match against Flavio Cobolli, but was beaten by Alex De Minaur in the following round. The event was won by Ruud, who continued his strong start to the year by winning a first ever title above ATP 250 level.

Alcaraz would recover from injury in time for the Madrid Masters event, and continued his fine form at this venue, having won the last two tournaments here. He did survive a scare against last year’s runner-up Jan-Lennard Struff, winning in a deciding set tiebreak. Jannik Sinner has been struggling with hip problems this week, but has still made it to the Quarter Finals. Rafael Nadal faced 16-year-old American Wildcard Darwin Blanch in the First Round, and dropped just one game. He then faced de Minaur again, but this time got his revenge to advance. His run was ended by Jiri Lehecka in the Fourth Round. The event is still going on at the time of writing.

Collins keeps winning

In her last season on the WTA Tour, Danielle Collins is playing arguably the best tennis of her career. After winning Miami in incredible fashion, she carried on her winning streak and won the WTA 500 title in Charleston, beating Daria Kasatkina in the Final. In the Stuttgart WTA 500, Iga Swiatek lost for the first time in 11 matches, in the Semi Finals against Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh went on to win the event, beating Marta Kostyuk in the Final.

In Madrid, Collins’ winning run was eventually ended by Aryna Sabalenka in a three set battle. She will meet 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva for a place in the Semi Finals, after she beat Marketa Vondrousova and Jasmine Paolini back-to-back. Iga Swiatek came through a three set match in her Quarter Final against Beatriz Haddad Maia, where she will play Madison Keys, who has taken out Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur to reach this stage. Like the men’s side, the women’s event is still taking place at the time of writing.
