April

April marks the start of the European clay-court swing, with the biggest events of the month taking place in Monte Carlo and Madrid. While clay is very different from grass, this part of the season still matters for Wimbledon, as form, fitness and momentum begin to take shape ahead of the summer’s two Grand Slams.

Alcaraz aims to defend Monte Carlo title

At one of the most scenic venues on the tour, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner headline the Monte Carlo Masters, with Novak Djokovic absent. Jack Draper, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton will also miss the event.

Former champions in the draw include Stefanos Tsitsipas, who has won in Monte Carlo three times, as well as Andrey Rublev and Stan Wawrinka. Alcaraz also leads the field in Barcelona, where Lorenzo Musetti and Alex de Minaur are entered, while Alex Zverev, Fritz and Shelton are set to play in Munich.

Although these are clay-court events, they still help shape the wider picture ahead of Wimbledon. Buyers and fans will be watching closely to see which leading names are building rhythm, and which players may arrive at the grass season carrying fitness concerns or strong momentum.

Strong women’s fields across April

The Charleston WTA 500 features Jessica Pegula, Belinda Bencic and Iva Jovic among the leading names, while the Linz WTA 500 on indoor hard courts has Ekaterina Alexandrova as the top seed.

The Stuttgart WTA 500 is set to be one of the standout events of the month, with Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff all entered. As the season develops, these events will offer a clearer view of which players are finding form and confidence ahead of the summer.

That matters for Wimbledon too. Big-name contenders tend to drive ticket demand, especially once the grass season gets closer and the likely contenders for Centre Court and No.1 Court become clearer. A strong spring can also shape expectations around who is most likely to headline the biggest show-court matches in July.

Sabalenka and Ruud look to defend Madrid titles

Madrid closes the month as one of the biggest clay events before Roland Garros. With Alcaraz and Sinner both absent from Madrid last year, Casper Ruud took advantage to win his first Masters title. This year, the top 78 men are currently entered, although Holger Rune will miss the tournament with a long-term Achilles injury.

Djokovic is expected to return to action, while two-time Madrid champion Zverev will be aiming to disrupt the expected Alcaraz-Sinner narrative. From a Wimbledon perspective, Djokovic’s return will be closely watched. Even at this stage of the season, any signs around his fitness, sharpness and schedule will shape expectations for the grass-court summer.

On the women’s side, the top 75 players are also entered, with Sabalenka leading the field after winning Madrid three times. Swiatek is the only other former champion in the draw and will be looking to build momentum on her favourite surface after a quieter start to the year than many expected.

Madrid could also influence the Wimbledon picture on the women’s side. If Sabalenka maintains her level, she will only strengthen her status as one of the names most likely to drive demand at The Championships, while any sign of Swiatek or Rybakina building momentum will also be closely noted by buyers planning ahead.

What April could mean for Wimbledon

April may be part of the clay swing, but it still helps shape the road to Wimbledon. Results, injuries and confidence levels over the next few weeks will influence how players arrive for Roland Garros and then the grass-court season that follows almost immediately after.

For Wimbledon fans, this is the point in the year when the bigger picture starts to form. Buyers planning ahead may want to watch which players are building momentum, which contenders are returning from injury, and which names are most likely to drive demand once the grass season begins.
