Wimbledon 2026 starts in:
The season kicks off in Australia with the first Grand Slam of the year. Who do we think will get their year off to the best start?
Australian Open
After his sensational triumph in Melbourne last year, world number 2 Rafael Nadal will be looking to defend his title. 9-time champion Novak Djokovic is allowed to play the event this year, having been prohibited from entering the country last year due to being unvaccinated. He has already arrived in Australia ahead of a warm-up event in Adelaide.
World number 1 Carlos Alcaraz will play the Australian Open for just the second time in his young career, aiming to recover from an injury that forced him to miss the ATP Finals at the end of last year. Last year’s runner-up, Daniil Medvedev, will look for a good run again here, or his ranking could drop even further than it is now, at 7. He was the world number 1 just over four months ago. Home favourite Nick Kyrgios will look to build on a strong 2022 season, and will be seeded this year in Melbourne. 2020 runner-up Dominic Thiem has received a wildcard.
Two-time finalist Venus Williams, aged 42, has also received a wildcard, and will make her 22nd appearance at the event. Defending champion Ash Barty has since retired from the sport, meaning that the trophy will change hands in 2023.
World number 1 Iga Swiatek will aim to win the event for the first time, having won the French Open and US Open in 2022. Her challengers will include Ons Jabeur, who has made the Final of the last two Grand Slams, and WTA Finals winner Carolina Garcia. Victoria Azarenka won the event in 2012 and 2013, making her another one to watch during the fortnight.
