May 2024

In May, tennis fans can look forward to the conclusion of the European clay swing with a 1000 level event in Rome followed by the second Grand Slam of the year: Roland Garros in Paris.

Rome

All of the top 75 men in the world are currently entered into the Rome Masters, including Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Rafael Nadal is also entered with a protected ranking. Italians Fabio Fognini, Matteo Berrettini, Matteo Gigante, Giulio Zeppieri and Andrea Vavassori have been given wildcards. Daniil Medvedev, despite showing frustration at clay in the past, won the title here last year, and will look to defend his title.

49 of the top 50 are entered into the women’s edition, which includes Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff. Elena Rybakina is also entered as defending champion.

Roland Garros

The top 90 men in the world are all entered into the French clay court Grand Slam. 14-time champion Rafael Nadal is expected to make his final appearance at this venue, and has entered using a protected ranking. Andy Murray hasn’t played at Roland Garros since 2020, and hasn’t won a match there since making the Semi Finals in 2017, but he too is expected to play his last ever Roland Garros. However, he has been injured since Miami in March, but has been spotted recently hitting balls on clay. Novak Djokovic won his third title here last year, and will hope to defend it. Sinner and Alcaraz will be his main challengers looking for their first Roland Garros title.

It remains to be seen whether Iga Swiatek can be stopped here. She is the defending champion and has lost only once in the last four years here. Last year’s Runner Up Karolina Muchova will not be fit for the event, as she is still recovering from a wrist injury. All of the other top 99 women at the time of entry are entered, apart from Petra Kvitova and Belinda Bencic, who are on maternity leave. Jelena Ostapenko and Barbora Krejcikova are the only other former champions in the draw, and Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber have used Special Rankings to enter.
