The European Clay Swing Builds to a Grand Finale

The European clay court season is reaching its peak, with a prestigious ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome followed closely by the second Grand Slam of the year at Roland Garros in Paris.

Sinner Set to Return in Rome

Jannik Sinner is scheduled to make his long-awaited return at his home tournament in Rome after a three-month break from competition. He’ll be joined by Carlos Alcaraz and defending champion Alexander Zverev. However, Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the event following an early exit in Madrid.

Several Italian players have been granted wildcards into the main draw, including Luca Nardi, Francesco Passaro, Fabio Fognini, and promising junior Federico Cina.

On the women’s side, defending champion Iga Swiatek leads a star-studded field that includes Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula. Remarkably, every player in the WTA top 75 is entered, with the exception of Barbora Krejcikova, who remains sidelined due to injury.

Alcaraz and Swiatek Look to Defend Roland Garros Titles

Carlos Alcaraz claimed his maiden Roland Garros title last year, defeating both Sinner and Zverev along the way. Those three players are expected to occupy the top three seedings this year. Novak Djokovic, a three-time champion in Paris, remains entered despite his withdrawal from Rome. Other notable contenders include former finalists Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud. Wildcard entries have not yet been announced, but it has been confirmed that this tournament will mark the end of Richard Gasquet’s career.

On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek has been dominant in Paris, winning every match there since 2021, with the exception of a loss during the Tokyo Olympic Games, held in Paris last year, to Qinwen Zheng. Both players are back in the draw this year, as are Sabalenka, Pegula, Gauff, and last year’s runner-up, Jasmine Paolini
