August 2025

August saw key events in Canada and the United States, in the lead up to the final Grand Slam of the year.

Mboko stuns field at home, Shelton claims maiden Masters title

19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko produced a stunning upset over Coco Gauff in Montreal to reach the Quarter Finals. She would complete the fairytale week by beating Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka to take home the WTA 1000 level title, her first title at WTA level.

In Toronto, Ben Shelton won his first Masters 1000 title, by beating Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, and Karen Khachanov in his last 3 matches.

Swiatek and Alcaraz win Cincinnati titles

In Cincinnati, the top two seeds were both taken out in the Quarter Finals: Aryna Sabalenka to Elena Rybakina, and Coco Gauff to Jasmine Paolini. Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek beat Rybakina and then Paolini to win the tournament.

Qualifier Terence Atmane enjoyed a life changing week, beating Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune to make the Semi Finals. His run would end at the hands of Jannik Sinner, playing his first event since winning Wimbledon. Carlos Alcaraz also skipped Toronto, and beat Alex Zverev to reach the Final. Unfortunately, Sinner was forced to retire after five games, giving Alcaraz a first title in Cincinnati.

Doubles specialists reign supreme in revamped US Open Mixed Doubles

The US Open raised many eyebrows when it announced a new Mixed Doubles format, taking place the week before the tournament in a shorter format. Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu, Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula, Swiatek and Casper Ruud, as well as Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva, were just some of the pairs featuring top singles players. It received criticism from many doubles players, and the event was won by last year’s winners and doubles specialists, Andrea Vavassori and Sara Errani.

In the first week of the Singles, Venus Williams, aged 45, returned to the event, and lost in three sets to 11th seed Karolina Muchova. Taylor Townsend took out Andreeva in the Third Round, and Paolini was beaten by Marketa Vondrousova.

Jack Draper, playing his first tournament since Wimbledon, was forced to withdraw prior to his Second Round, and Ben Shelton has to retire in this Third Round match against Adrian Mannarino. Zverev was beaten by Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Third Round, and former champion Daniil Medvedev lost to Benjamin Bonzi in a crazy First Round match, which featured a photographer coming onto the court mid-point.
