February 2025

This month saw ATP and WTA events in Europe, North America, South America, and the Middle East.

Sinner banned for 3 months

The biggest news of the month came off the court, as world number 1 Jannik Sinner was given a 3 month ban for a positive drug test last year. The Italian has only played at the Australian Open this year, but will be back in time for the next Grand Slam at Roland Garros.

Sinner's first event after the ban ends is likely to be the Rome Masters, which begins 7th May.

Anisimova and Andreeva win first WTA 1000 titles

In her first match since the Australian Open Final, Aryna Sabalenka was beaten by Ekaterina Alexandrova in Doha. Coco Gauff was also beaten in her first match by Marta Kostyuk. Alexandrova would go on to beat Jessica Pegula to reach the Semi Finals, where she would face Amanda Anisimova. The young American won in straight sets to advance to the Final.

In the other half, Iga Swiatek came through against Elena Rybakina to make the Semi Finals. She would face an in-form Jelena Ostapenko, who had already beaten Jasmine Paolini and Ons Jabeur. Ostapenko dominated Swiatek to extend her head-to-head with the Pole to 5-0. However, she couldn’t keep her run going as Anisimova picked up her first WTA 1000 title.

In Dubai, Clara Tauson had an inspired week, which began with her knocking out Sabalenka, and ended with her reaching the Final, beating Karolina Muchova to do so.

It turned out to be an even better week for 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who beat Iga Swiatek and Elena Rybakina to join Tauson in the Final. After winning the first set on a tiebreak, Andreeva ran away with the second set to claim her first WTA 1000 title, and break the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time.

Alcaraz wins first indoor title

Carlos Alcaraz won the Rotterdam ATP 500 title, beating Alex de Minaur in the Final, to lift his first indoor ATP title. Denis Shapovalov had an amazing week in Dallas, beating Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Casper Ruud on his way to his first ATP 500 title.

It was an underwhelming Golden Swing for Alex Zverev, who was beaten in the Quarter Finals in Buenos Aires by Francisco Cerundolo and Rio de Janeiro by Francisco Comesana. 18-year-old Joao Fonseca won his first ATP title in Buenos Aires, and Sebastian Baez defended his Rio title.

The Doha ATP 500 had a stacked field this year, but Novak Djokovic was beaten in the First Round by Matteo Berrettini, and Alcaraz was knocked out in the Quarter Finals by Jiri Lehecka. Andrey Rublev ended up winning the title, beating Jack Draper in the Final.

Stefanos Tsitsipas won Dubai, beating Felix Auger Aliassime in the Final, and Acapulco was won by Tomas Machac, who lifted his first ATP title after defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Final.
