January 2025
The new tennis season began in January, and the first Grand Slam of the year was played out in Melbourne, Australia.
Dominant title defence for Sinner
The Australian Open began with upsets on the men’s side at the hands of youngsters: Andrey Rublev beaten by Joao Fonseca, Casper Ruud lost to Jakub Mensik, Stefanos Tsitsipas beaten by Alex Michelsen and last year’s runner-up Daniil Medvedev defeated by Learner Tien.
Taylor Fritz also lost early, but to veteran 38-year-old Gael Monfils. Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic managed to avoid early losses and set up a blockbuster Quarter Final clash, won by Djokovic in four sets. Alex Zverev would meet Djokovic in the Semi Finals, having taken out Tommy Paul in the previous round. However, after a tight first set won by the German, Djokovic retired with injury, putting Zverev through to a first Australian Open Final.
After seeds fell early in his half, the path seemed clear for defending champion Jannik Sinner to return to the Final with ease. He was tested against Holger Rune in the Fourth Round, but survived in four sets. Sinner dispatched home favourite Alex de Minaur in the Quarter Finals, with Ben Shelton also advancing to the Semi Finals after beating Lorenzo Sonego.
Despite Shelton serving for the first set, Sinner beat him in straight sets. The Italian then beat Zverev in the Final in straight sets to win his third straight hard court Grand Slam title.
Keys unlocks first Grand Slam title
One of the stories of the tournament was of lucky loser Eva Lys. Having only found out she made the main draw minutes before her First Round match, thanks to a late withdrawal, she not only won that match, but won two more to make the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time, where she was beaten by Iga Swiatek. Lys would also break into the top 100 for the first time thanks to her run.
Swiatek had been in cruise control during the event, not coming close to even dropping a set in reaching the Semi Finals. She would face an in-form Madison Keys, with the American having beaten top 10 seeds Danielle Collins and Elena Rybakina already. In an epic encounter, Keys saved match point and beat Swiatek in a third set tiebreak to make a second Grand Slam Final, and a first since 2017.
Aryna Sabalenka was attempting a three-peat of Australian Open titles, and reached the Semi Finals after a three set win in the Quarter Finals over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
It looked like Sabalenka would face Coco Gauff, until she was upset in the Quarter Finals by Paula Badosa. Sabalenka beat good friend Badosa in straight sets to reach the Final.
In a back and forth Final, Keys triumphed over Sabalenka in three tight sets to win her first Grand Slam title, beating the world number 1 and 2 to do so.
