July 2025

The Championships, Wimbledon took place in July, with new winners crowned in both the Men’s and Women’s Singles.

Sinner claims revenge over Alcaraz in Final

The tournament began on the men’s side with numerous big names falling: Alex Zverev, Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev were beaten in the First Round, with Jack Draper losing in the Second Round to veteran Marin Cilic. Taylor Fritz had to come through back-to-back five setters against big serving duo Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gabriel Diallo. Carlos Alcaraz was pushed to five sets by Fabio Fognini in the First Round, with the Italian former top 10 player retiring from the sport weeks later.

Top seed Jannik Sinner cruised through the first week, but found himself two sets down against Grigor Dimitrov in the Fourth Round. However, Dimitrov sustained a pectoral injury in the third set and was unable to continue, meaning Sinner advanced. He then beat Ben Shelton, and Novak Djokovic beat Flavio Cobolli to meet him in the Semi Finals. Sinner continued his recent dominance over Djokovic with a straight sets win, to reach a first Wimbledon Final.

Alcaraz defeated home hope Cameron Norrie in the Quarter Finals, with Fritz beating Karen Khachanov at the same stage. Alcaraz overcame Fritz in four sets to set up a second consecutive Grand Slam Final meeting between him and Sinner.

Unlike in Paris, it was Sinner who came out on top, coming from a set down to win the Men's Final in four sets.

Swiatek dominates to lift title

Like the men’s draw, there were plenty of early upsets on the women’s side, with Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Qinwen Zheng losing in the First Round, and Jasmine Paolini exiting in the Second Round.

Aryna Sabalenka was still going strong though, and beat Laura Siegemund to make the Semi Finals. She faced Amanda Anisimova, who had just beaten Anastasia Pavyluchenkova in the Quarter Finals. The American overcame Sabalenka in three sets to make a first Grand Slam Final.

In the other half, Iga Swiatek was having the best Wimbledon of her career, and she kept that going by beating Liudmila Samsonova to reach the Semi Finals. Belinda Bencic beat Mirra Andreeva to join her there, and Swiatek beat Bencic convincingly in the Semi Finals, dropping just two games.

Swiatek’s Grand Slam winning experience showed in the Final, storming to the title without dropping a game against Anisimova, to claim her first Wimbledon title and sixth Grand Slam title.

North American hard court swing begins

Whilst many of the top players opted to have a break after Wimbledon, some headed over to the United States for the start of the North American hard court swing, which finishes with the US Open.

Leylah Fernandez beat Anna Kalinskaya to win the WTA 500 title in Washington, with Alex de Minaur winning the ATP 500 event at the same venue, saving match points in the Final against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
