June 2025

June saw the conclusion to Roland Garros and the start of the grass court season.

Alcaraz beats Sinner in classic final

Jannik Sinner was in commanding form, beating Alex Bublik to reach the Semi Finals without dropping a set. He would face Novak Djokovic, after the Serb beat Alex Zverev in four sets. Sinner edged out Djokovic in three close sets to reach his first Roland Garros Final. In the other half, Lorenzo Musetti continued his great clay court form, beating Frances Tiafoe to make the Semi Finals.

Carlos Alcaraz was also in very good form and beat Tommy Paul to join Musetti in the Semi Finals. The pair split an entertaining first two sets, and after Alcaraz ran away with the third, Musetti was forced to retire in the fourth set.

This set up a hotly anticipated first Grand Slam Final between Alcaraz and Sinner, and it did not disappoint. Sinner took the first two sets, but Alcaraz fought back to take the third. Sinner had 3 match points in the fourth set, which were all saved by the Spaniard, and then he won a tiebreak to force a deciding set. Alcaraz served for the championship in the fifth set, as Sinner did in the fourth set, and was broken by the Italian.

A deciding set tiebreak was a fitting ending for such a dramatic match, and Alcaraz dominated it 10-2 to win his second consecutive Roland Garros title.

Gauff takes home first Roland Garros title

The biggest surprise of the tournament was French wildcard Lois Boisson, who went on a giant killing run, beating Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva to make the Semi Finals. Ranked number 361, after her run was ended by Coco Gauff in the Semi Finals, she rose to world number 65. Gauff herself had to come from a set down in the previous round against Australian Open champion Madison Keys.

The other half of the draw was looking stacked, with defending champion Iga Swiatek having to face former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the Fourth Round. Despite dropping the first set 6-1, the Pole survived. Elina Svitolina took out last year’s Finalist Jasmine Paolini, and was then beaten by Swiatek in the Quarter Finals. Aryna Sabalenka beat Amanda Anisimova to set up a meeting with the woman who won Olympic Gold at this venue less than a year ago, Qinwen Zheng.

Sabalenka came through to face Swiatek in the Semi Finals. In a three setter, Sabalenka handed Swiatek her first defeat in this event since 2022. In a back-and-forth Final, Gauff came from a set down to win her first Roland Garros title, and second Grand Slam.

Wimbledon preparation in full flow

Just a week after his Roland Garros victory, Alcaraz was back in action at Queen’s. He won the title for a second time, beating Jiri Lehecka in the Final. Sinner also returned in Halle, but was beaten early by an inspired Alex Bublik, who went on to win the event, beating Daniil Medvedev in the Final.

Women’s tennis returned to Queen’s for the first time in 52 years, and the title was sensationally won by qualifier Tatjana Maria, who beat Karolina Muchova, Rybakina, Keys and Anisimova on her way. 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has struggled with injuries since her maiden Grand Slam title, but she had a magical week in Berlin, beating Sabalenka and Keys on her way to the title.
