March 2025

The Sunshine Double took place in March, two of the biggest events of the season outside of the Grand Slams for the ATP and WTA Tours, at Indian Wells and Miami.

Draper clinches maiden Masters, Andreeva goes back to back

World number 1 Jannik Sinner was suspended for Indian Wells (and Miami), meaning Alex Zverev was the top seed. But he couldn’t extend his stay beyond his first match, as he was beaten by Tallon Griekspoor. Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud followed suit, losing to Botic van de Zandschulp and Marcos Giron respectively. Second seed Carlos Alcaraz had no issues early on, not dropping a set to reach the Semi Finals. He met an in-form Jack Draper, who had beaten Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton to reach this stage. In a topsy turvy match, The Brit inflicted Alcaraz’s first defeat at Indian Wells since 2022 to reach the Final.

In the other half, Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev found form to both reach the Semi Finals, with Rune taking the win to reach the Final. It was a dominant victory for Draper in the Final to win his first Masters 1000 title, and break the top 10 for the first time.

On the women’s side, Mirra Andreeva was coming off the back of her first WTA 1000 title in Dubai, and maintained that good form to overcome Elina Svitolina and reach the Semi Finals. She faced Iga Swiatek, who had just beaten Qinwen Zheng and not dropped a set yet. The teenager, having beaten Swiatek in Dubai, beat her again in three sets, to reach the Final.

In the other half, Aryna Sabalenka had been in impressive form, and had beaten Liudmila Samsonova to make the Semi Finals. She faced an Australian Open Final rematch against Madison Keys, with the American having just defeated Belinda Bencic. Keys won the match in Melbourne, but she could only manage one game this time around in a brutal victory from Sabalenka. In the Final, Andreeva came from a set down to beat Sabalenka and win the Indian Wells title, her second WTA 1000 title in a row.

Teenage dream run from Mensik, Sabalenka claims title

All of Indian Wells’ men’s Semi Finalists lost their first match in Miami the following week. Champion Draper was beaten by Jakub Mensik, Finalist Rune by Reilly Opelka, and Alcaraz and Medvedev lost to David Goffin and Jaume Munar respectively. Zverev fared slightly better than Indian Wells, but lost in the Round of 16 to Arthur Fils. The Frenchman was then beaten by Mensik, to set up a Semi Final with Taylor Fritz. The American had just come through a thriller against Matteo Berrettini. In another three setter, 19-year-old Mensik came through to book a place in his first Masters Final.

In the other half of the draw, last year’s Runner Up Grigor Dimitrov found some form, making a run to the Semi Finals. He faced Djokovic, who had beaten Lorenzo Musetti and Seb Korda in straight sets, and the Serb secured another straight sets victory to reach his first Final of the season. But it was Mensik who beat Djokovic in two tiebreaks to win the title. The teenage Czech started the week outside the top 50 and without any title at ATP level, and ends the event in the top 25 and with a Masters title to his name.

Emma Raducanu showed some strong form, taking out Emma Navarro and Amanda Anisimova to reach the Quarter Finals, where she was beaten by Pegula in 3 sets. The story of the tournament though, was 19-year-old Alexandra Eala from the Philippines, who took out two Grand Slam champions in Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys to reach the Quarter Finals. She faced Iga Swiatek, and produced another sensational upset to beat the Pole in straight sets. Pegula beat Eala in three sets to reach the Final.

Sabalenka put her Indian Wells Final defeat swiftly behind her and cruised through the Miami draw, not dropping a set against defending champion Danielle Collins, Qinwen Zheng, or Jasmine Paolini, to reach the Final. This time, she got the win, beating Pegula to win her first Miami WTA 1000 title.

Kasatkina to represent Australia

After gaining permanent residency, the world number 12 Daria Kasatkina will represent Australia going forward. Before competing under a neutral flag since 2022, she had represented Russia.
